Intended for use with either version of the Airfix Ferret Mk.2

Ferret Mk.4 was the first in-service version of the ‘Big-Wheeled’ Ferrets. Ferret Mk.3 was actually the very first, but never saw active service with only six prototypes being built, all being open topped – in effect, a swimming Mk.1.

All ‘Big-Wheeled’ Ferrets had larger wheels and tyres (the same as later fitted to Fox). The original Ferret hull had a shelf built onto the the existing body, carrying a float screen around its four sides. Brakes were now discs instead of drums, all held by a new suspension.

The first production version was the Mk.4 which had the same MG turret as the familiar Mk.2 (SMM3564T). Deliveries began in 1967, all of them being converted from existing Mk.2/3s. Conversion work went on until 1976 apparently, with exact numbers built being unknown. However, it was probably less than 100 vehicles.

What few in-service photos we have, saw Mk.4s in Belize, Berlin, N. Ireland and Sharjah (a solo vehicle in a column of Mk.2 Ferrets and Land Rovers, possibly on trial), all armed with Brownings. All of them have kept the float screens fitted.
