There is a general misconception that these ropes are called kinetic ropes. This is incorrect. These are simply tow ropes made from synthetic material.
The actual kinetic recovery rope was 30 feet long and carried by just one vehicle per troop – usually a Samson or support truck. During recovery, the tow ropes would be attached between the long kinetic rope and the recovery vehicle. Utilising the motion of the tow vehicle, the energy stored in the flexible kinetic rope pulls the vehicle out of trouble – in theory.
